| From Anchorage we got a bus to Fairbanks to start our cycle journey. Billie's Hostel was full so the greenhouse became our home in Fairbanks. The yellow onion on top is said to be a landmark for incoming aircraft. |

| We waited in Fairbanks for the rain to clear. It finally stopped at 3pm and we set off on our first day cycling at 5pm. But with only 2 hours of darkness per night we had plenty of time before nightfall. Wide roads and little traffic made for enjoyable cycling. |

| When camping in bear country it is recommended that all food and cooking equipment is strung at least 10 feet up in the trees at night along with any other interesting smelling items such as soap and deodorant. |

| As an extra precaution Jeremy kept an arsenal of weapons next to him in the tent. Any bear trying to enter would have to deal with Jeremy's industrial size pepper spray, Alaskan hunting knife and air horn. |
