Miles 1330,  Days total 28,  Days off 6, Total Accumulative Ascent 13435m

The red line is the route we cycled.  Our route brought us into Venezuela in the north west from where we followed the coast of the Falcon State stopping for a day at the National Park of Morrocoy where we explored the islands and white sand beaches by boat.  From here we headed south ascending the hills which separate the coastal areas of the north from the central planes of the Orinocco Valley.  Our route took us generally east to Cuidad Bolivar where we crossed the Orinocco River.  From here we headed a little further east to Cuidad Guayana before heading south and up through dense rain forest to the grasslands of the Gran Sabana and on to Santa Elena de Uairen - the final stop before crossing the border to Brazil.

The blue dotted lines on the map represent side trips we took away from our cycle route.  The first was a trip by bus from Maracay, which is just east of Valencia, to the capital city of Caracas.  Although our original plan had been to fly from Panama to Caracas we decided not to route our cycle journey through Caracas itself, a City renowned for its high level of crime.  We did however wish to do some final shopping before heading towards the Amazon and thus made a visit without our precious bikes.  A second detour from our cycle route was at Cuidad Bolivar where we took a 5 seater charter plane together with an English couple we met to see Angel Falls.
