We entered Panama via the rural province of Chiriqui. On our first day
we happened upon a calf roping competition. Teams of riders compete to
successfully lasso calves as they race across the enclosure. This one
got away. |

| When the young calves are successfully lassoed they are
brought to a very abrupt halt causing them to fly off their feet and spin in
the air. They seem unhurt by this and are able to give the competitor a hard
time as he tries to haul them in to release the rope. |

| Equally as entertaining as the roping was the struggle to
herd the calves back to the top of the enclosure. The calves’ mothers were
calling from a field opposite and so they were trying to do everything
possible to remain as close to them as they could. |

| Compared with other Central American countries, there are
few hotels in Panama and so we had to rely on locals' hospitality for the
first few nights. The owner of this house invited us to stay in her spare
room. |

| This room was only scantily furnished and far from bug
proof so we pitched our tent inside. |
