Monte Alban
Monte Alban, an ancient city in a dramatic setting on a mountain just outside of Oaxaca.
Astronomical calendars were important for Monte Alban's inhabitants for predicting events and deciding on auspicious dates for action.  The building in the foreground was the observatory.
Dramatic skies over Monte Alban.
This is a ball court.  Here a ritual ball game common throughout ancient Mexico was played in which a ball was bounced through hoops using the hips.  The looser of the game was sacrificed.
