We entered South America at the beautiful port city of Cartagena in
Northern Colombia. |
|
Cartagena was a key outpost of the Spanish Empire. The
appearance of the old town has changed little since then. |
|
There are no cars allowed within the walled city but horses and carts
providing taxi services which are popular with the locals. |
|
In the evenings the squares are bustling with people.
The city is popular with both Colombian and foreign tourists. There are
many street performers and open air cafes. |
|
A view of the new city from the walls of the old
city. Treasure was stored inside the old city whilst awaiting shipping
to Spain on galleons. It was, therefore a prime target for pirates and
fortifications were elaborate. |
