Cartagena
We entered South America at the beautiful port city of Cartagena in Northern Colombia.
Cartagena was a key outpost of the Spanish Empire. The appearance of the old town has changed little since then.
There are no cars allowed within the walled city but horses and carts providing taxi services which are popular with the locals.
In the evenings the squares are bustling with people. The city is popular with both Colombian and foreign tourists. There are many street performers and open air cafes.
A view of the new city from the walls of the old city. Treasure was stored inside the old city whilst awaiting shipping to Spain on galleons. It was, therefore a prime target for pirates and fortifications were elaborate.
